The characters of Maggie and Willie Essay The play Hobsons choice is set in Salford near Manchester in the north of England, in the 1880s. This scene takes place in the boot shop, which Hobson owns, he has four daughters the eldest is Maggie she pretty much runs the shop as Hobson, since his wife died, has turned into an alcoholic. The scene starts with Maggie saying Dinner at half past one girls, Well give him half an hour this looks as if Hobson has gone to the pub but Maggie has told him that lunch is at One but he says its not. So Maggie appeases and says its at half one. From the words Well give him half an hour it seems as if this argument is a regular occurrence. Maggie then proceeds to order Willie, a cobbler at the shop, up from the cellar/workshop this shows that Maggie is the boss which is unusual in the Victorians hierarchy style class structure. Willie would probably think at this point that he has done something wrong as workman where expected to stay in the workshop. The stage directions say that he stops halfway up the stairs meaning Maggie would be looking down on him as if to tell him off. Maggie then gives him another order Come up, and put the trapdoor down this again shows Maggies dominance this would come through on stage. The stage directions then say He (Willie) comes reluctantly Willie would be thinking the worst at the moment the actor would show this with body language and facial expressions. Willie trys to make an excuse to leave were very busy in the cellar Maggie doesnt say anything she just points at the trap, Willie closes it. This shows although not conventional in Victorian society Willie is used to taking orders from a woman. Show me your hands is Maggies next request/order. He makes an excuse, their Dirty, but still complies as if he cant deny Maggies order. Willie is still very nervous Maggie would be able to see this but has yet done nothing to reassure him showing that Maggie enjoys having power over Willie. Maggie then pays him a complement yes there dirty but there clever they can shape leather like no other mans that came into this shop. She asks him where he learnt his trade, here he replies, she refuses his answer saying, Hobsons never taught you to make boots the way you do Willie insists his answer is true. Maggie gives him another compliment youre a natural born genius at making boots but then insults him its a pity youre a natural fool at all else this might be because she finds it hard for herself to compliment someone who she might see as below her. Willie is starting to feel a bit more confident that hes not in trouble but then Maggie asks him when he gonna leave Hobsons? Willie must now think hes got the sack this would show on stage as he stutters out leave Hobsons I I thought I gave satisfaction Maggie doesnt answer his question but throws another question back at him another proof that she enjoys the power balance between her and Willie. Willie says he is not leaving Hobsons until he is rich Maggie again calls him a fool but Willie replies with then Im a loyal fool showing that loyalty is important to Willie.

Computers and the Internet For most of my high school career, I have used the Internet for my research. My method relied on printing out the material, highlighting the important sections and trying to interpret these sections into my own words to incorporate this research into my papers. I feel that the Internet has made it harder for students to use research in their work. Copy and paste are two of the best tools in the computer. When you do take information, there is no typing at all. With two clicks of a mouse, you could have a complete term paper after only a few minutes of searching. The temptation is there and with the increased academic pressures at college, many students succumb. The web is always available. In the middle of January, you don’t have to bundle up to go to the library all you have to do is type in a few â€Å"search† words and instantly you have all the information at your fingertips. Resources, when readily available, often get abused. This is the case with the Internet. Most college students feel that they are invincible. Who would be able to catch them cheating? No one. They go ahead and do it. Any person who cheats and gets away with it may feel a â€Å"high† of some sort. This might tempt them to try it again. The student then does it and gets caught. The ramifications could throw their life into shambles. What about a job or getting into another college? If a stricter cheating, copying and plagiarizing policy were in effect from middle school on, I believe that the problem may be cut in half. College may be the first place where a student is under a lot of stress to produce for him/herself and their families. If that student were confident in the writing and researching abilities, then they would have less of a chance to â€Å"crack† and plagiarize. Tough and earlier enforcement of plagiarizing consequences would help to cut back on the student’s temptation to plagiarize. Many people don't know about copyright laws. Therefore no one understands the term â€Å"copyrighted† According to Open Spaces magazine, â€Å"the core purpose of copyright laws as expressly stated in the constitution is: to promote the process of knowledge and learning.

Early marriage Essay

Early marriages are marriages that happen between people under the age of eighteen. Such marriages are spread all over Palestine. In particular, they occur in Palestinian rural rather than urban areas. These practices take place for several reasons. One very important cause is the religious definition of adulthood which is more related to physical and biological aspects rather than psychological and behavioral. Another essential purpose for this practice is the lack of adequate education. Moreover, sometimes it is caused by the negative social point of view that links between fertility and age for women. However, governments, nowadays, are working to decrease the practice of early marriage as it deprives girls from their major rights and causes many health consequences for them. One effect of the early marriage is that it takes away many of the girls’ major rights. Firstly, it deprives them from the right to continue their education. As an illustration, the majority of girls, especially those who live in rural areas, are forced to get married instead of persisting their education. Furthermore, this deprivation results in lack of knowledge on how to raise the children well. Secondly, being forced to marry at an early age does not allow the girls to choose their lifelong partner. Thus, it makes her more of a follower instead of taking her decisions by herself. Finally, girls who marry at a young age are often isolated from their society and friends. This means, most of the young wives do not have the right to communicate freely with their family and friends since the responsibilities does not allow them to do so. On my point of view, forcing young women to marry before they reach eighteen years old is a violation against basic human rights. Another possible effect of the early marriage is that it leads to some bad health consequences on the woman herself and on her children too. For example, young brides are expected to become pregnant at an early age and there is a strong connection between the age of a mother and affectionate mortality. To be specific, Girls ages l0-14 are five times more likely to die in pregnancy or childbirth than women aged 20-24 and girls aged 15-19 are twice as likely to die .additionally, young mothers live greater risks during their pregnancies and suffer from many complications. For instance, they go through many dangerous conditions such as heavy bleeding, fistula, infection, anemia, and eclampsia which contribute to higher mortality rates  of both mother and child. In addition, early marriages may also lead to vulnerability to HIV/AIDS among young wives. To be particular, in Africa, Being young and female is a major risk factor for infection and young girls are being infected at a considerably disproportional rate to that of boys. Despite the fact that early marriages are sometimes seen by parents as a mechanism for protecting their daughters from HIV/AIDS, future husbands may already be infected from previous sexual encounters; so, it is a risk which is particularly serious for girls with older husbands. The lake of major rights and the physical consequences are some of the effects of early marriage that leads to a poor life to an innocent child. Therefore, there has to be more emphasis on the governments to convince people against it .However, families, nowadays, have recognized that young marriages are not good for children especially for girls. In addition, some concerned groups have actually tried to make new laws in countries so that the legal age of marriage will be raised to eighteen or more in order to save lives and create a better world for females.

Sympathy By Frederick Douglass And Sympathy By Paul...

In the past, slaves, whether they were men or women, child or an adult, were often treated cruelly. The slaves weren’t able to rebel or escape and just had to go with it. They needed a way that they could express their emotions and the feelings that they had inside of them. That’s when they decided to start singing, and when they would be sent on a journey, they would sing the entire way there. They would sing about all the cruelty, harsh treatments, and misuse that was being done to them. Frederick Douglass’s Narrative and the poem â€Å"Sympathy† by Paul Laurence Dunbar both argue that the slaves sang songs during their journeys to express their emotions and feelings. In Narrative Douglass explains how the slaves sang their songs to†¦show more content†¦The slaves sang, â€Å"†¦ most when they are most unhappy. The songs of the slave represent the sorrows of his heart; and he is relieved by them, only as his aching heart is relieved by its tears†¦Ã¢â‚¬  (Pages 8-9). With the previous quote, Douglass uses a metaphor in which he compares the song to all the sorrow that the slaves have been through. As one can see, in order to relieve all the pain and misery that the slaves went through, they sang songs. In the poem â€Å"Sympathy† by Paul Laurence Dunbar, Dunbar also explains how the slaves sang songs to relieve their pain and misery which was caused by slavery. Dunbar also went through something similar to what Douglass went through when he states, â€Å"I know what the caged bird feels.† It’s different when you have been through it yourself, and when you have just heard about it. Experience is the real deal, and once you have, you’re scarred for life as Dunbar states with the help of imagery, â€Å"I know why the caged bird beats his wing till its blood is red on the cruel bars.† The use of imagery in this quote helps the readers imagine what the poet is talking about. When you go through all that, all the misery and pain, you need a way to express your emotion and the things you have been through. That’s why the slaves sang their songs, â€Å"It’s not a carol of joy and glee, but a prayer that it sends from its heart’ s deep core,† stated Dunbar in the poem.
